How to Become a Hospice or Palliative Care Social Worker
- Complete a bachelor’s degree in social work or a related field.
- Pursue an MSW with relevant coursework.
- Seek an internship in a medical, hospice or palliative care setting and complete required fieldwork.
- Take the licensing exam.
- Earn relevant certifications.
While it may be possible to find an entry-level social work position in a hospice setting with a Bachelor of Social Work and work experience, most employers in hospice care require social workers to be licensed MSWs. That’s because hospice social workers provide much more than access to resources.

The National Association of Social Workers sets most of the field’s standards, credentials, and continuing education requirements for licensure. While you can still provide social work-like services without a college degree, you need at least a bachelor’s degree to practice with a license.
How do you become hospice certified?
For general hospice RN certification, requirements are as follows:
- Hold a current, unrestricted RN license.
- Have a minimum of 500 hours working as a hospice and palliative care nurse in the previous 12 months, or 1,000 hours in the most recent 24 months.
There is no state law that precludes a social worker from receiving and documenting verbal orders. THerefore, a HHA may have a social worker accept and sign verbal orders as long as the HHA’s “internal policies” authorize this procedure. (Note that if a LPN, LVN, or BSW take the verbal order it must be co-signed.)
